Bioluminescence
Explainer Video
This project is my MFA thesis project exploring motion design in short-form educational media for children. Applying the research and theories from my thesis, the project explains bioluminescence to children through a collage-style explorer scrapbook experience, guiding young audiences through scientific discovery in an engaging and approachable way.

Discover the ocean’s glowing secrets.
This project presents bioluminescence through an Explorer Scrapbook concept, where children become young explorers documenting their discoveries. Scientific ideas are introduced as visual notes within a handmade scrapbook, using collage textures, illustrations, and glowing elements to make complex knowledge more accessible and engaging. The handcrafted aesthetic creates a warm, child-friendly learning experience while enriching sensory engagement. Designed as a dynamic explorer’s handbook, the animation guides children step by step through bioluminescence, transforming scientific content into an imaginative and approachable adventure.

Color & Lighting Tests
The original style frames felt overly blue and visually dark, so I refined the color palette to create a more balanced and cohesive look. The firefly scenes were adjusted to better match the blue tones throughout the project, while the underwater scenes were brightened to enhance clarity and visual engagement. I also explored both brighter and darker versions to compare the mood and overall atmosphere of the piece.
Style Frame Refinement
The original style frames felt visually complex, so I refined the compositions to show where the bioluminescence appears more clearly. I also adjusted the beach colors to improve clarity and make the glowing elements easier to recognize.
